a.k.a SUBLIMINAL exclusive interview

Introduce yourself and tell the world who you are and what you stand for…

I go by the name a.k.a. SUBLIMINAL.  I am a multifaceted soul hop artist from Toronto Canada.  I first got into Hip-Hop when I was six years old through beat-boxing and a since graduated to DJ, emceeing and now production.  I am also a motivational speaker who does all lot of work with the youth as well as an actor.  My main motto is that not everyone can be a gangster and I reflect these and other positive messages in my music which is a blend of neo soul and Hip-Hop.

Let’s talk about your latest project. Who produced it, who features, where can people grab it and what seem to be the most popular tracks?

My latest project is my album entitled TRAINATHOUGHT.  I produced all 17 tracks from top to bottom including all artwork.  The album features some of Toronto’s number one artists as well as some American artists such as my boy Hezekiah from Philly and Rah Digga from Jersey.  The album ‘TRAINATHOUGHT’ is available for download on all major sites such as: iTunes, napster, rhapsody, emusic, amazon OR can be ordered online from cd baby.  The most popular track varies depending on the crowd listening.  The Neo Soul crowds love Beautiful to Find and Music, the club crowds like Stuck to You while the hip hop heads love My People and I Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere ft. Rah Digga.

So what’s your label situation and do you have a manager or booking agent?

I am still independent for now.  The label I am with is called MCJB Ent.  I do have an agent  (the Messinger Agency) but that is for the acting. The goal right now is to get a distribution deal.

How did you get into music and what would you credit as your main influence and your main breaks that have helped you to get where you are today?

I first got into hip hop when I was 6 years old.  I was trying to impress a girl at recess by beat boxing every time she walked by trying to get her attention…the rest is history.  My influences continue to change as I grow as an artist, but right now I am looking at groups such as Foreign Exchange and Eric Roberson for inspiration.  These groups are speaking from the soul about real things that I can relate to.  This music for me is a reminder that it is ok to be real on a track and speak about what you know.  Especially in the black community where too often we regard our women in a negative light, or feel that to have success means to have lots of bling etc…Don’t get me wrong though, if that is cool for you..it’s all good, but all that negative stuff just ain’t me.  A big break for me was opening for Mos Def in Utah (LINK: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mtDUoBcyk8k), and most recently actor/director Robert Townsend speaking highly about me and my acting abilities (LINK: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=km415VX4ntY)

We love Hip-Hop music here at Hip-Hop Shizzle… but being totally honest what do you love the most about Hip-Hop?

The ability to express yourself in so many different ways on one stage…whether it be break dancing, scratching, riding a beat or doing all 3 in the same show, ITS ALL GOOD!  There is something about that thick bass line, powerful kick and snapping snare not to mention the art of sampling that gets me every time.

A lot of people are moaning with the way Hip-Hop music has gone? What’s your take on how the Hip-Hop industry is at the moment?

Since we are being honest, I miss the days when an emcee would really freestyle on the spot, or when lyrics were about realness and had real meaning.  There was a time in hip hop, that if you rhymed about things you didn’t have you’d be frontin’.  There was a time when more thought went into albums, production and content.  There was a time when radio played more than just the same 3 or 4 artists.  I love hip hop, but miss certain things as well…I guess that is what I am trying to bring back in my own way.  Because of the work that I do with kids in the hood I see firsthand what the ‘fast food’ hip hop is doing to our young minds.  I have a problem with 9 year old kids singing 50 cents magic stick, while at the same time they have no concept of what true hip hop, and the culture really is.  For many it is money, women, shoes, etc.  The world is changing…I know….but that doesn’t mean I have to like everything in it.

Do you have a website, My Space, Twitter, Blog and Facebook page?

Fa’sho’…haha, check me out at: myspace.com/akaSUBLIMINAL, facebook.com/akaSUBLIMINAL and twitter.com/akaSUBLIMINAL…web site akaSUBLIMINAL.com coming soon!!!!

Do you have any good footage on You Tube or any music videos?

and you know thisssssssssssss….here are a range of links, from me opening for Mos Def, to motivating the youth to my acting reel.  Peace king, and thanks for the love.

MR DRASTICK EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

Introduce yourself and tell the world who you are and what you stand for…

I am Mr Drastcik; I am an unsigned rapper from London. I stand for keeping lyricism at a high standard in my music and speaking my mind as I do so.

Let’s talk about your latest project. Who produced it, who features, where can people grab it and what seem to be the most popular tracks?

My latest project is a mix tape called SO MANY DEVILS. I got a couple producers on there. As usual, I got Gus ‘L.G’ Hall & Jon Phonics on there, a new guy who makes the best up tempo bangers called Sir Sleaze, and another new guy called Jeanzy Molanza. This guy is a pure hip hop producer, that traditional sound. SO MANY DEVILS is straight fire! I wanted it to feel like a private conversation with my fans so I only featured my nephew Young Rakz who is 17. I have no usual features because all the people I reached out to for features on my last project THE GLADIATORS ANTHEM, don’t seem to be returning the favour. So I am just all about family and real friends from now.  Luc Skyz was supposed to be on there but he was late to the studio lol. Don’t matter coz we got a collaboration E.P coming 2010 summer. Any, way lol am going on too much. SO MANY DEVILS is a free download mix tape available at my web site.

So what’s your label situation and do you have a manager or booking agent?

My label situation is non existence lol. I don’t have a deal. I been doing all I have done since 2006 with my big brother Pharaoh biggs. Some times my pockets are heavy, some times their empty. But I love rapping. No manager or booking agent too. The ones I met were more interested in convincing me to act like a grime artist or the rappers who talk that gangster shit. I am a knowledgeable speaker. If I don’t spark a thought in my listeners, then I am not Mr Drastick.  So I guess I aint attracted the right label or management yet.

How did you get into music and what would you credit as your main influence and your main breaks that have helped you to get where you are today?

I didn’t get into music, I was born into it. Since a boy I showed signs of self expression through the arts. I used to write poetry and draw some heavy portraits of family and rappers I like. I guess once I heard rap music, I found the perfect channel to project another side of my soul.  My main influence is Tupac Shakure. I feel as if that guy was more than just a rapper, he is like a brother to me. I connect with his music. He was the last of hip hop’s true icons. All these other rappers are too interested in money to realise that their fans are just immature. Tupac thought me a lot as a boy. I read up on black panthers because of him, I appreciated my realness more because of him. Who has the guts to write a song called ‘dear mama’? No one but Pac. Any way, as for what helped me get my name out there, hustling! Hitting the streets and pushing my mix tapes as hard as I could. Dj’s like Semtex, Manny Norte and 279. Friends speaking of me, fans too and the internet.

We love Hip-Hop music here at Hip-Hop Shizzle… but being totally honest what do you love the most about Hip-Hop?

I can’t explain it. I just love hip hop. May be it’s the fact that I love rappers that you can tell care about what they say or how they say it. Like Big Pun, he is some one who as a kid I analysed his word plays. I love hearing rappers like Eminem, Black Thought, slaughter house, Nas (in his prime), and rappers like that with top notch lyrical ability.

A lot of people are moaning with the way Hip-Hop music has gone? What’s your take on how the Hip-Hop industry is at the moment?

In the UK, it’s shit! All these soulless mainstream puppets. Same as USA, but they have a balance because their underground scene is bigger than our mainstream scene here. So fans can have a voice to represent them. Here its simply mainstream or youtube. I am just interested in what I am doing if I see a fellow rapper on a similar path, I’ll run with them. That’s how a scene is created.

Do you have a website, My Space, Twitter, Blog and Facebook page?

Yeah. www.mrdrastickeuro.com , www.facebook.com/mrdrastick , www.twitter.com/mrdrastickldn

Do you have any good footage on You Tube or any music videos?

Yeah, www.youtube.com/mrdrasticktv

Thanks for the interview guys. One love!

Southern Hospitality Presents: Livewire – ‘The Unofficial Compilation’ FREE DOWNLOAD

Southern Hospitality is proud to present to you this free compilation comprising the best music from one of the Bay Area’s hottest crews – the Livewire Empire.

The name says it all.

Formed of Oakland’s livest wires and hailing from all four corners of the Town, the Livewire Empire’s membership has risen above sectional tensions and maintained a strictly if never willingly one foot in, one foot out the pokey policy. Signed and delivered via the new Pac – J. Stalin – the congregation of Oakland’s hardest and hardest working artists have been dominating our lives over the past couple of years.

To understand Livewire the music and movement you first must get acquainted with their leader and patron – someone who went from selling confectionary on the Bay Area Rapid Transit railway system as a boy to serving bags of something or other as a young man, to getting put on by Richie Rich, and who in only a few years has graduated to owner/CEO of Livewire Records and president of Town Thizzness.

J. Stalin’s own words about his own music, taken from our exclusive interview with the man last spring, tell us all we need to know about the central tenets of the Livewire Empire: “I like making songs where they got feeling in ‘em. Emotion, where you really saying something. And I like making music that’s timeless, that’s gonna mean something 10 years from now, five years from now and so on.”

Livewire are the Outlawz to Stalin’s Pac. Except there’s more of them. And they’ve proven to be way more prolific in the short time they’ve operated as a movement; so much so that Southern Hospitality has been inundated with pleas to put out a compilation and scratch the surface off a seemingly impenetrable shell of output from artists like Philthy Rich (five albums in under a year), Shady Nate (160 tracks in 16 months), Jay Jonah, Lil Blood, Lil Rue and the dozen or so core members.

We were only too happy to oblige, and while it is far from a definitive Livewire compilation, this officially unofficial set should serve as the perfect introduction to those uninitiated in a collective of artists that have consistently delivered uncompromisingly soulful, hard-edged but nourishing music from the heart. And that’s all we could ask for, and all we really want.
